Plus, these exercises are simple to do, can be done from most anywhere, and only take a few minutes! Perfect for you! 1. Find a small, quiet place, where you can spend at least 5-20 minutes of your day by yourself. It doesn’t matter if this is in the morning or at night; it can be as youre starting your day in the morning, in the bathroom or the shower, during your commute to work/school in the car, back at home at night cooking dinner in the kitchen, in your bedroom, or your backyard could be an option too! It is important that you find a space where you can warm up privately alone, even if you have to go into a closet to get away from roommates or younger siblings! The point is you want to feel comfortable warming up, and not be worried about people hearing you. 2. Start with simple warm ups.  Humming is a great way to start warming up your voice, starting at a comfortable range in your voice. You do not need to overdo these vocal warm ups keep it very light and simple. You are working your muscles just as an athlete stretches his or her muscles before a game. Humming (either before an audition, or when you wake up in the morning) to see what condition your voice is in (especially if you are sick or suffering from allergies) is a great way to keep your voice strong and healthy! 3. Work on a song or your audition piece. After you have spent about 5-10 minutes on a light and easy warm up, you can move on to a song you are working on for fun or for an audition. The key is not to sing full out at first; if you are pressed for time, do a quick “mark” or run-through at half volume of the song, and then sing the song or section full out once. Some people do this right before an audition, to make sure they can hit all the notes or phrases. Singing the song full out once or twice will do minimal damage and is considered a healthy approach to warming up. Belting your song full out ten times before an audition is not effective, as by the time your audition rolls around, your voice may be extremely tired and fatigued and because you hit those notes ten minutes ago, you may not be able to hit them again, since they have been overused! 4. Do not sing in inappropriate public places. The life of an aspiring singer is often very busy and challenging, going on several auditions each day and working several different jobs. Again, I recommend finding a nice, quiet space to yourself to warm up. Oftentimes, I see people on the subway, walking down the street, waiting in line at lunch, or in school warming up at the top of their lungs (some do it to show off!). This is not healthy for your voice, and most often not comfortable for others. We all get that you are an aspiring singer, and your voice is important to you, but if you are battling the noise of subway trains moving by, or singing outside when it’s raining, or in a busy school cafeteria, your voice is going to become fatigued very soon, and you won’t really be able to hear yourself. The only exception I make is warming up in a car, if there really is no other time or place to do your daily routine. Just be careful not to get distracted! Also, many people wear he adphones when they warm up to music; this is okay to a point, but I recommend putting one earbud in your ear and keeping the other out of your ear, so you can hear the music and yourself! Introvert Whisperer / 9 Steps for Deciding on a Career - Introvert Whisperer 9 Steps for Deciding on a Career Often times when people talk about raising children you hear people say, “There is no owners manual that came with this child”.  I think we should broaden the saying to “We didn’t come with an owners manual on managing our life”.   For the more obvious things like managing a home and relationships, we can observe our parents and a few others for examples of what to do or to avoid.   Unfortunately, for one of the bigger decisions we make in our life â€" that being what career to pursue â€" we are on our own.  The parents didn’t talk much about career choices and we also didn’t hear that much on our path through life.   If there were 1 common approach that people use for this seriously important choice it would be that most people use job search to “find something”.  It’s like describing a mushroom hunt.  You don’t know exactly where to look, you don’t know what you will find and whether or not what you find will kill you if you eat it.   Nice.   Let me lay out the bottom-line on this:  You will spend more time working than any other thing you will do in your life, other than sleep.  If you relegate this decision to “finding something” you will become part of the 60â€"70% of workers who hate what they do for a living.   Seriously, is that what you had in mind for your life?   If I’ve got your attention, let me offer up a process to help facilitate you in making a career choice.  Notice I didn’t say find a job.   #1 â€" What looks interesting to you right now? And why? Stay open-minded, as all you are trying to do is to understand yourself and what works for you as it relates to occupations.  This is a brainstorm so anything you think of works.  The idea with this is to come up as many occupations that look at all interesting to you.  Don’t get caught up in thinking about pay or qualifications.  You simply want to think about what sounds interesting and then figure out what is it about the occupation that sounds good.  You might think being a floral designer sounds fun because you enjoy creating and artistry.   #2 â€" What do you like and dislike in the work you’re doing or have done? Make a list of both things so you have a clear idea.  Don’t add in environmental things like you didn’t like your boss or the long drive.  You can look at those things when you launch your job search.  You want to look entirely at the work you do or have done.   #3- Make a new job. From the work you did on #2, take the things you enjoyed and create a new job using only the things from the list.  You can put them together in different combinations to stimulate your thinking.  You can take just one thing and make that an entire job.  Here’s an example from my background:  as a manager, I coached people, I took that and turned it into my current profession.  Previously, I did project management as part of my job and I took that and made it my entire job at one point.   #4- Take a career assessment. This isn’t my favorite or first task I would suggest.  The reason is that people often are disappointed by what the output of an assessment is rather than to use it as one piece to an entire puzzle.  Don’t expect a clear answer because we are too complicated for an assessment to tell us exactly what to do.  I would also suggest taking the assessment and ask a career professional to work with you to help process your results.  You can learn loads and be given some career suggestions that have potential.   #5 â€" Interview friends and family. You’d be shocked at how the people who know you best see you in ways you don’t.  Sit down with these people individually to ask them what type of profession could they see you doing.  They may see potential in you that you take for granted.   #6- Brainstorm while you’re at it. While you have your friends and family with you, take them through your “like” list and do step #3.  The power of having more brains on this endeavor the better.  We get too tunnel visioned sometimes and having other people cook up jobs based on your “like” list can turn up some interesting ideas.   #7 â€" Combine and research. You now have a lot of ideas and insight about you.  You now need to roll up your sleeves and do some research. Take all the information you’ve gathered and turn it into an occupation.  A great place to start is: https://www.onetonline.org/ You can search for occupations using your various lists and then learn a wealth of information to help you decide if the occupation works for you.   #8 â€" Test So far, all of this is a theory.  You need to confirm or make your decision by speaking to people who do the occupations of most interest to you.  You should be fairly close to a decision but speaking to people doing the work will help you confirm by getting a first-hand account of the good and bad of the job.  All occupations have the good parts and bad.  You can’t avoid that but what you can avoid is going into an occupation where the bad is too big for you.   #9 â€" Make a plan. Regardless of your academic status, the start of a semester is a great time to regroup and reorganize. Its often a busy time, and it can sometimes be challenging to stay on track. Therefore, the more organizational strategies you can incorporate into your routine, the better. Hacks for getting your college life organized include adding a whiteboard to your wall, maintaining a balanced daily schedule, and reviewing events at the end of each day. The start of a new semester can be overwhelming, but finding strategies to stay on top of your tasks can set you on a path to success. Here are four hacks for an organized college life: 1. Maintain a balanced daily schedule College can quickly become all-consuming. However, if you establish healthy boundaries and strive to maintain balance, you can keep yourself healthier and happier, and likely become a less stressed college student. Strive to maintain an 8/8/8 balance each day when it comes to sleep, school, and your personal life. You have 24 hours in a day, and not all of them should be spent studyingjust like not all of them should be spent socializing. Maintaining an 8/8/8 schedule may be made easier with the help of an electronic or paper planner. Start by blocking out time for all of your existing activities to see how much time you spend in each of the three categories. Then, adjust as needed. Add a whiteboard or chalkboard to your wall Everyone knows to-do lists can help keep you on track when youre a college student trying to stay organized. Keeping that list right in front of you when youre in your roomon a highly visible whiteboard or chalkboardis a great way to keep yourself on task. A board is a great space to write to-do lists, as well as important reminders like appointments, phone numbers, and other notes. You can also attach important papers and documents to your board with magnets, helping you keep them front of mind. Incorporate a weekly cleaning session into your schedule When youre a busy college student, its easy to overlook cleaning your living space. Adding a weekly cleaning session of an hour or two to your schedule to tidy up and arrange your things can work wonders for keeping you organized. The more frequently you look at and re-evaluate the items in your room, the less likely you are to lose track of important things and information. End each day with a recap It can be a challenge for even the most organized college student to stay on top of schoolwork, classes, exams, friends, family, and personal matters. This is why ending your day with a short recap of what youve accomplished that day, and what you need to do the next day, can be beneficial. Write down a short bullet list of the days accomplishments, any tasks you didnt have time to complete, the highlights of your day, and any urgent matters that need tending to the next day. What You Should Expect from a Private Tutor 25 Rules (Part 3) Improving Academic Performance In our previous two articles, we discussed what to expect from a private tutor before and during tutoring sessions. We covered communication, logistics, planning, and specific tutoring strategies and techniques. In this article we’ll finish our series of 25 rules by covering rules 21-25 by exploring what to expect after a tutoring session. After the Session The tutoring experience doesn’t end when the clock turns off on the session itself. How you interact with the tutor after the session is important and can help make for a positive or negative experience. Immediately following the session, the tutor should summarize quickly the key learnings and takeaways from the session and how it fits into the broader “study plan” being followed. This helps reinforce the material in real-time and can take various forms. If the tutoring session was about preparing for the GMAT, as an example, and this was the first diagnostic session with the tutor, the student may not have decided whether or not to continue with the tutor. Still, the tutor should be able to offer some real-time thoughts on, if this relationship were to continue, and even if it doesn’t, what the student should be focused on. If the tutoring session was related to a specific subject, like geometry, then the tutor should have some thoughts about what topics are likely to be coming next, how what they discussed today relates to those topics, and how to prepare. An important best practice is for the tutor to send a written summary of the session to the student (and perhaps parent) summarizing what was covered and how it fits into the broader study plan. If this was the first tutoring session, then the written summary could and perhaps should be an actual written study plan documenting how the tutoring relationship will be approached. It is very important to document in written form the plan being followed so a student can reference it and orient themselves to where they are in the tutoring process. In some cases, the tutor may need to do a little research to find online tools or practice problems (i.e., reviewing certain elements of Kahn Academy) to help build a student’s skills in a given area. If appropriate, you might find a tutor spending some time to research online tools or practice problems to help a student build skills in weaker areas. This is sort of an “extra credit” best practice. If a student is really struggling with something, there are often web-site or additional materials that can help, and an expert tutor can help identify and direct a student towards those resources. The tutor should include in his or her summary email details on scheduling for the next month or so. Neither party should be surprised that someone’s schedule has changed or that someone is going on vacation. It is important to be highly structured around scheduling and logistics. At MyGuru, some of our best tutors were unfortunately not strong when it came to scheduling and organization more generally. We had students express that the tutoring sessions themselves were excellent, but getting confirmation of times and dates for future sessions was like pulling teeth. We’ve worked hard to address this. The tutor should be available to respond to simple, easy questions via text or email as part of an effective long-term tutoring relationship. Obviously, “off-line” interaction needs to be kept to a minimum and be within reason. The tutor isn’t being paid for this time, after all, so his or her time needs to be respected. That said, the tutoring relationship should not just exist within the confines of the 1-2 hour tutoring sessions. In some cases, more extensive off-line QA sessions via email or text can be a productive part of a tutoring relationship, and something for which we’ve charged students at discounted rates. Summary Working with a private tutor is a significant investment. And at the end of the day, it’s on the student and/or parent to “own” the process and put in the work to extract value out of the experience. At the same time, it is right to expect a lot from your tutor in terms of communication, planning, and, of course, instruction.
